Many Christians struggle with internal battles and outward circumstances they can’t explain. No matter how many sermons they attend or how much they pray, the patterns persist. The key often lies in a spiritual principle most believers overlook: generational curses.
What Are Generational Curses?
Generational curses are spiritual inheritances—negative patterns, behaviors, or demonic assignments—that are passed down through family bloodlines. These aren’t merely bad habits or psychological tendencies. They are spiritual strongholds backed by demonic power. They give the enemy a legal right to torment and operate within a family line until someone breaks the agreement.
God’s Word confirms this spiritual law. In Exodus 34:7, He declares:
“…visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” (Exodus 34:7)
This isn’t about God being cruel—it’s about justice. Sin opens spiritual doors. And when those doors are never closed, the demonic realm gains continued access to a family line. These curses can manifest as:

Idolatry, witchcraft, bloodshed, broken covenants, and sexual sin are just a few of the spiritual entry points that can empower generational curses. Even if you never personally committed those sins, your ancestors may have—and that spiritual debt can affect you until it’s repented for and renounced.
Christ Has Redeemed Us—So Why Do We Still Struggle?
Here’s the powerful truth: Jesus Christ has already redeemed us from every curse.
“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us…” (Galatians 3:13)
On the cross, Jesus broke the curse. He absorbed every legal claim the enemy had on our lives. So if that’s true, why are so many believers still bound?
Because redemption is received, not automatic.
We must apply the finished work of Christ with action. This includes:
- Repenting for the sins of our ancestors (Nehemiah 9:2)
- Renouncing all spiritual agreements made knowingly or unknowingly

- Rebuilding new patterns of righteousness through the renewing of the mind (Romans 12:2)

Step-by-Step Process to Break Generational Curses
1. Repent for Generational Sins
“I repent for the sins of my ancestors—my grandparents, parents, and all those before me. I ask for forgiveness on their behalf, and I renounce any demonic assignments passed down to me.”
2. Repent for Personal Sins
“Father, I repent for agreeing with the behaviors and thought patterns of my family line. Forgive me for what I did knowingly or unknowingly. Cleanse me of all unrighteousness.”
3. Break Agreement with Demonic Spirits
Speak this out loud:
“I break all agreement with generational curses and demonic spirits. I declare they have no legal right to me. I cancel every assignment in Jesus’ name and decree their power is null and void.”

How to Cast Out Generational and Familiar Spirits
“Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent and come out of him!’” (Mark 1:25)
“Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” (Mark 5:8)
Follow Jesus’ example. Command specifically:
“I cast out every generational spirit of fear, in Jesus’ name.”
“I cast out all familiar spirits attached to my bloodline. Go now, in Jesus’ name.”
Then, fill the space:
“Holy Spirit, I invite You to fill me. Close every door to the past. Heal me and seal me in Jesus’ name.”
Don’t Forget the Home: Breaking Territorial Spirits
Curses can linger on properties and objects. Spirits don’t want to leave their territory. Just like the demons begged Jesus to stay in the region through the pigs (Mark 5:11-13), spirits can be attached to heirlooms, land, or old items.
