There’s a war happening in the unseen realm—and whether you realize it or not, your home is a part of the battlefield.
As someone who has taught on deliverance and demonic eviction for decades, I’ve seen how demons not only afflict the mind and body, but also seek to inhabit physical spaces. The spiritual realm is constantly looking for legal access. If we’re not vigilant, the enemy can claim ground—even through the very objects we allow into our homes.
Jesus said in Matthew 12:43–44 (MEV)
“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through dry places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’”
The demonic sees people—and places—as potential “homes.” That’s why spiritual housecleaning is not just a good idea; it’s a biblical mandate. It’s time to evict what doesn’t belong and make space for the Holy Spirit to dwell.
Territorial and Familiar Spirits: What Are You Hosting?
When I read Mark 5, I see how territorial spirits begged Jesus not to send them out of the region. They didn’t just want to possess a man—they wanted to remain in a specific geographic location. Spirits are territorial, and they often try to occupy homes, regions, or even entire family lines.
Familiar spirits work differently. These demonic entities study generational behavior. They know what your grandparents struggled with, and they’ll try to repeat those same patterns in your life—whether it’s fear, addiction, anger, or oppression. They’re deceptive, subtle, and they exploit unhealed trauma or open doors in our soul.
Ephesians 4:27 (MEV) says, “Do not give place to the devil.”
But how do we unknowingly give him space?
Often, it’s through objects and atmospheres.
Objects that Attract Demons
There was a time I bought several crosses on clearance. They looked harmless—Christian even. But during a time of worship, a strange heaviness filled the room. The atmosphere shifted. I discerned something was spiritually off. As I examined the crosses more closely, I noticed distorted faces etched into the metal. Later, I found out crosses can be made in the same factories as Buddhas in China and can have spiritual attachments or be dedicated to a false god before shipping.
These items—though shaped like the cross—were spiritually contaminated. I got rid of them immediately and prayed over my home.
Deuteronomy 7:25–26 (MEV) gives us a strong command:
“You must burn the graven images of their gods with fire. You must not desire the silver or gold that is on them… You shall not bring an abomination into your house, lest you become cursed like it.”
This isn’t legalism—it’s protection. God doesn’t want you cursed. He wants your home to be filled with His Spirit.
Spiritual Atmosphere Matters
The Holy Spirit taught me something powerful: just like His presence can saturate a home, so can demonic activity. You can feel it when you walk into certain homes or regions—a heaviness, an uneasiness, an invisible weight pressing on your chest. That’s not your imagination. That’s spiritual warfare.
Likewise, when you enter a home where worship is frequent and prayer is consistent, there’s a peace and a lightness. That’s the kind of environment we want to cultivate.
Psalm 22:3 (MEV) says, “You are holy, O You who inhabits the praises of Israel.”
God inhabits worship. Demons inhabit darkness, unrepentant sin, and defiled objects.
Objects You Need to Rethink
Here’s a list of items I’ve seen repeatedly in homes with demonic activity. Some are obvious, and others are more subtle.
- Statues from other religions (Buddhas, Hindu gods, etc.)
- Dream catchers, yin-yang symbols, peace signs
- Jewelry from ex-lovers or broken relationships
- Family heirlooms passed down without discernment
- Gifts from people involved in the occult, New Age, or witchcraft
- Books, artwork, or music that glorify sin or the demonic
- Unidentifiable symbols or inscriptions on clothing, decor, or accessories
- Objects tied to trauma, death, or rebellion
- Anything that produces a “check” in your spirit
You may love the object. It may have sentimental value. But ask yourself: is it worth the spiritual warfare?
How to Spiritually House Clean
Here’s what I do and what I teach others to do:
- Pray room by room: Invite the Holy Spirit to walk with you. Ask Him to highlight any object or area that is spiritually compromised.
- Anoint entry points: Use anointing oil to mark windows, doors, and mirrors. Speak the blood of Jesus over your thresholds.
- Discern what to remove: If something gives you a check in your spirit, don’t ignore it. Put it in a sealed bag or bin while you pray. Ask the Holy Spirit if you can cleanse and keep it or if you need to destroy it.
- Don’t fear value or sentiment: The emotional or monetary value of an item is never worth spiritual oppression. If it needs to go—let it go.
- Destroy or permanently discard: Don’t pass it to someone else. That only transfers the issue. Burn, break, or trash it with finality.
- Reclaim your space: Speak life into your home. Declare Scripture. Play worship music. Open your Bible and read aloud.
What You May Be Feeling
If you’ve struggled with strange illnesses, persistent nightmares, mood swings, spiritual lethargy, financial loss, or tension in your home—you may be under spiritual oppression connected to what you’ve brought into your environment.
It’s not always just a “bad week.” Sometimes it’s warfare.
2 Corinthians 2:11 (MEV) says,
“We are not ignorant of his devices.”
We must be spiritually aware of how the enemy operates—and take action.

Ask yourself:
- What item in my home gives me a sense of unease?
- What have I kept out of fear or sentiment?
- Have I experienced unusual warfare or heaviness since bringing something into my home?
- What is the Holy Spirit prompting me to examine?
Write these down. Pray over each one. Ask the Holy Spirit for specific instructions.
Final Thoughts: Make Room for His Presence
Your home should be a sanctuary for the Holy Spirit—not a landing zone for demons. As believers, we have been given authority to evict the enemy, cleanse our homes, and establish a dwelling place for the Lord.
I encourage you: don’t delay. Begin the process. Walk through your home in prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes. And when He shows you something—obey.
The peace you’re longing for is possible.
It starts with one decision:
Cleanse the atmosphere. Remove the enemy. Make room for the glory of God.
