Break Word Curses and Speak Life: Harnessing the Power of Your Words for Freedom and Healing
Words are not merely sounds or syllables—they are spiritual carriers. They either release blessings or bind us with invisible chains. Many of us live with the effects of word curses spoken over our lives—phrases from parents, coaches, teachers, doctors, or even ourselves—that took root and began to shape our destiny.
“You’re so clumsy.”
“You’ll never succeed.”
“You’re probably going to get sick like your father.”
“Don’t cry.”
“Stop being sensitive.”
These aren’t harmless phrases. They are seeds—some planted in fertile ground of innocence or pain—that grow into fruit we never asked for. But what if you could reverse the curse? What if you could take back the authority and rewrite your internal narrative through the Word of God?
Words Carry Spiritual Weight
The Bible is unmistakably clear: speech has the power to determine outcomes. Proverbs 18:21 says,
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Proverbs 18:21 MEV
Words don’t just affect emotions—they shape destinies, break spirits, build strongholds, and release blessings. Every idle or purposeful word carries consequences.
Jesus said:
“But I say to you, that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the Day of Judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Matthew 12:36-37 NKJV
We are judged by our words. That means our mouth is not just a speaking organ—it’s a spiritual weapon. When wielded rightly, it releases heaven. When misused, it gives Satan a legal right to operate.
What Is a Word Curse?
A word curse is any declaration made—either by you or someone else—that releases fear, limitation, or spiritual hindrance into your life. These include:
- Negative medical predictions (“You’ll have this the rest of your life.”)
- Fear-based commands (“Don’t get in a car accident.”)
- Dismissive parenting (“Stop being dramatic.”)
- Self-talk rooted in defeat (“I’ll never be healed.”)
Kathy DeGraw teaches that our words open spiritual gateways. When we speak defeat, trauma, or fear, we create a landing strip for demonic torment and anxiety. Even declarations made in sarcasm or jest can serve as legal rights for the enemy.
Recognizing the Fruit of Word Curses
Word curses manifest in our lives in many ways:
- Recurring fear about health, driving, death, or abandonment
- Low self-esteem or imposter syndrome
- Chronic anxiety, especially in certain relationships or activities
- Difficulty receiving love or encouragement
- Repeating the same patterns of failure or rejection
Ask yourself:
- What phrases did I grow up hearing that still affect how I view myself?
- What do I consistently say about my life, body, or future?
- Have I spoken death over my own situation without realizing it?
Renounce and Replace: Break the Agreement
Deliverance begins with renunciation. You must reject and cancel every agreement you’ve made—intentionally or accidentally—with the lies spoken over your life.
Step 1: Recognize and Renounce
Identify the exact phrases. Say aloud:
“I renounce the words spoken over me that said, ‘You’ll always struggle with this.’ I cancel that agreement in Jesus’ name.”
“I break every word curse that told me I’d never succeed. I rebuke it and speak truth over my life.”
Step 2: Replace with God’s Word
Declare the truth of God’s promises:
“God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”
2 Timothy 1:7 MEV
“I am a new creation in Christ; the old things have passed away.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 MEV
Step 3: Anoint Your Mouth
Use anointing oil as a prophetic act to consecrate your mouth. Speak aloud:
“I dedicate my tongue to the Lord. I will speak life and not death. I will bless and not curse.”

Speak Out: A Practical Weapon
In Kathy’s books Mind Battles and Speak Out, she equips believers with strategies to use their voice as a sword in the Spirit. You are encouraged to speak Scripture aloud daily, not just meditate silently.
Declare:
- “I walk in divine health and healing. No sickness formed against me shall prosper.”
- “I bless my mind with the peace of God that surpasses understanding.”
- “I reject every lie and accept my identity as victorious, chosen, and loved.”
Scriptures to Declare Over Your Life
“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but only that which is good for building up, that it may give grace to the listeners.”
Ephesians 4:29 MEV
“A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it crushes the spirit.”
Proverbs 15:4 CJB
“Whoever guards his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles.”
Proverbs 21:23 MEV
