When You Feel Unheard by God | Learn How to Trust He’s Listening Even in Silence

June 20, 2023

There is something so tender and vulnerable about bringing your heart before the Lord, only to wonder afterward if He truly heard you. If we’re honest, most of us have experienced this kind of moment—one where silence fills the room, doubt creeps in, and questions swirl in our soul: Did God hear me? Did my prayer even matter?

I know the answer now, and it’s yes. Yes, He hears every word. But that understanding didn’t come easily. It was shaped by wounds, revelations, and the tender voice of the Holy Spirit.

Breaking the Lie: “I Am Unheard”

For years, I unknowingly believed a lie—that I was unheard, not just by people but by God Himself. People close to me often overlooked my words or responded only in part. Conversations felt one-sided, and reactions were muted. As this pattern repeated, I began to assign the same limitation to my Heavenly Father. I equated God’s response (or what I perceived as a lack thereof) with how humans treated me.

But one day, during a mentoring session, my mentor looked at me and said with Spirit-breathed precision, “You feel unheard.” It was a word of knowledge that pierced straight through to my soul. In that moment, it was as if the Lord laid bare a hidden root, and it finally made sense—why I overreacted in certain situations, why I felt crushed by simple miscommunications. That word uncovered a wound I hadn’t even known was still bleeding.

God’s Love Speaks—Even in Silence

The truth is, God does not ignore His children. “For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and His ears are open to their prayers…” (1 Peter 3:12, MEV)

Even when it feels like He is silent, He is still listening. His silence is not absence. In fact, silence often means He is moving in deeper, unseen ways. Some of the most powerful breakthroughs happen not in what He says, but in what He does while we wait in faith.

I had to remind myself of what was true even when it didn’t feel true. When the enemy whispered that my prayers were floating in the void, I returned to Scripture and remembered what God had said. And He confirmed it to me prophetically in December of 2021 through another word: “I hear every word you pray. Sometimes you don’t believe that, but I do; I hear every word you pray.” What a comfort that was—not just a general truth for the world, but a love letter from the Father to me in my moment of need.

Why God’s “No” or “Wait” is Still Love

Sometimes we wrongly assume that if the answer isn’t yes, then God didn’t hear us—or worse, that He doesn’t care. But the answer itself is not the evidence of His love. His nature is.

The truth is, His answer is always rooted in love. Whether it’s yes, no, or wait, the underlying response is this: “I love you, and I am working things out for your good.”
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28, NKJV)

Our God is not transactional. He doesn’t respond to us based on performance or perfect words. He responds because He is a good Father.

How to Heal the Feeling of Being Ignored by God

If you’ve struggled with feeling unheard, it’s time to allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the root of that belief. Is it connected to childhood trauma? Was there a key relationship where you were silenced or dismissed? Ask the Lord to show you, and be willing to forgive those who misrepresented the Father’s heart.

Then, allow the truth to take root.

Scriptures to Declare Out Loud:

“The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth.” (Psalm 145:18, NKJV)

“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things which you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3, MEV)

“Before they call, I will answer; while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” (Isaiah 65:24, CJB)

Questions to Ask Yourself:

Do I believe God hears other people more than He hears me?
When did I first start feeling like my voice didn’t matter?
Am I equating God’s response with how people have treated me?
What moments in my life prove that God has answered me?
Have I been impatient, wanting my will more than His will?
